ADHD

ADHD and ADD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder of the neurodevelopmental type. It affects children and can also affect some adults.

We are often asked how do we know if my child has ADHD or ADD?

There are things to look out for – Children as a whole are easily distracted and fidgety, as life is exciting for a child, lots to see and do. However, you may notice it is hard for your child to regularly stay focused and they are distracted more than other children. You may begin to notice that your child has a lack of attention, they are hyperactive and have impulsive behaviour. It is not a sign of illness or low intelligence.

Often children with ADHD may present with some aspects and not others as there are three types, which may include elements of ADD – Attention Deficit Disorder

The Three Types –

ADHD combined type:

Children with this type tend to have trouble concentrating, are fidgety or restless and are always on the go. They often act without thinking.

ADHD inattentive type or attention deficit disorder (ADD):

Children with this type tend to have trouble concentrating, remembering instructions, paying attention and finishing tasks.

ADHD hyperactive/impulsive type:

Children with this type are always on the go, have trouble slowing down and often act without thinking.

For accurate diagnosis we liaise with your child’s crèche, kindergarten or school to ensure comprehensive assessment and formulate management plans. At CCH we have Doctors and Psychologists who use a variety of internationally recognised scales and criteria to diagnose ADHD.

It is essential that ADHD is assessed as soon as possible as these behaviours can affect your child’s learning and may lead to further emotional problems. Under the right care children diagnosed with ADHD or ADD can lead healthy lives.
